Jo singsThe launch of 'Saltwater & Stone' at Orkney Folk Festival 2009 - Fiona Driver, Elma Cullen & Graham Simpson

The Cromarty Hall - August 2009

  Graham Simpson & Derek Curtis

Jo has grown as a performer in her own right since moving to Orkney in 2002. She regularly appears at the Orkney folk Festival & many community events. Jo has a knack of drawing people into the stories she sings about & sometimes people even find themselves joining in during chorus songs!

Having been part of the Irish & English session scene where she used to live in the South of England, Jo has learnt to source a varied collection of songs.

"Being a traditional singer you can often find that people expect you always to sing such sad songs because the melodies are always so beautiful. Over the years I have divied very hard to learn songs that are uplifting, sing along chorus songs or just happy songs! I only manage to kill off two people on my CD, which is really quite unusual for a traditional singer"!

NEWS - 'together they create a beautiful & mesmerising sound that takes the listener on a musical journey through song'

Jo has a new line up; including as before well known, talented Orcadian guitarist & percussionist, Graham Simpson. From the south of England but now living in Orkney is, Derek Curtis playing wonderful irish wooden flute & low whistles. Derek is also in the process of making his own flutes & will be displaying at the Musical & Instrument Exhibition at this years Orkney Folk Festival.

Joining Jo this year & making her debut performance at this years Orkney Folk Festival is Kathie Touin on keyboard. Kathie is originally from California & is a talented singer/songwriter. Her piano playing is truly sensitive to Jo's singing style.
